In today’s digitally growing world you guys must have seen some moving pictures for a few seconds on social media. Do you know what this type of image format is?, the answer is GIF (gif full form?). They are also used in social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, or social messenger like Whatsapp too.
Gif gives a different look to images. Where most of the images are only motionless and have only width and height. But GIFs have not only height or width but also a bit of video. Now this question must be coming to your mind that can there really be a motion image exists, then the answer is yes, that is why a GIF moves. Let’s know the full form of the gif.
Gifs are mainly used in online chatting to enhance the conversion between people. In India, gifs are mostly used during festivals like Holi, Diwali, etc.
Meaning and GIF Full form
GIF is an image file that is animated by combining multiple images or a single video, that is commonly used in websites and social media. The gif full form (abbreviation) is ‘Graphics Interchange Format’. Similarly, the JPEG image format has (Joint Photographic Experts Group).
As you know guys that gif format is a special and most popular format for bitmap images. Its support for transparency and the ability to create a multi-frame image. It turns out like a small video, but without sound. The file stores several frames (there can be a lot of them, there are no restrictions on the number of frames).
In one single file, animated GIF stores all the frames, as well as information about how long each frame needs to be shown.
GIF Images usually use an understanding algorithm called LZW encoding that favors non-degradation and loss of image quality. Due to lossless compression used in the gif that does not reduce the quality of the image.
Features of Gif that you should know
1. Small data capacity
Since the original compression algorithm “LZW” is used and the number of colors is stored up to 256, the data capacity is very small. Also, because it is designed to be highly compatible with Web pages, the load of displaying images via the Internet is also reduced. “LZW” is a compression method that is more efficient than the same run length compression as JPG and PNG.
2. Transparent processing is possible
Some GIF formats support background transparency, so you can make some or all of your image transparent. However, unlike PNG, it supports only two levels: “completely transparent” and “opaque” (translucent cannot be handled).
3. Can make animation
By putting multiple images in one GIF file, you can make it look like a movie. However, since the number of colors is up to 256, it is not able to work as a full-scale animation.
Advantages and Disadvantages of GIF Formats
In the arsenal of gifs, there are “only” 256 colors, and in this respect, JPEG has colossal advantages – after all, digital photographs can have millions of colors and shades.
But GIF uses an original and very effective file compression system, which allows you to recover images completely losslessly insufficient quality. Which is a big problem for the mentioned JPEG?
The compression algorithm of Lempel, Ziv, and Welch was invented even earlier – generally in the late seventies, in the midst of a stagnant period.

GIF types and their Information
As you know the gif full form lets know its types. Let me tell you that GIF format has been published for more than 25 years, but it is still it is more popular on the web. Almost all GIFs use the 89a format.
The first version of gif 87a was released in 1989, after this its enhanced version 89a was removed in support of Transparent Background Color. Later more development and improvement were done in GIF, which brought out another file format of the image commonly called PNG.
You can find the version of a specific GIF image by simply opening them in the text editor and in which you just have to see the first six characters in the document it can be (GIF87a or GIF89a).
This 89a format was quite similar to the 87a specification but it carries the transparent backgrounds and image metadata. Both formats support animations, for which they allow a stream of images to be stored in a single file. However, the 89a format supports animation delays.
GIFs support many buttons, headers, and banners on a website because gifs are capable and typically do not require too many types of colors. However, most web developers prefer to use the PNG, JPG format, since PNGs support a wider range of colors and also includes an alpha channel.
Alpha channel makes it possible to have a single image for any webpage background color with transparency to make it blend smoothly. On the other hand, neither JPEGs nor PNGs support animations, that’s one of the reasons animated GIFs are still very popular on the web.
A GIF image can actually store about 256 colors. These are complete in multiple blocks to separate the image, each of which also has a unique 256 color palette. These blocks are combined into a single rectangular image, which can theoretically produce a “true color” or a 24-bit image.
But this process is rarely used because the resulting file size is much larger than a JPEG file.
According to Original creator of GIF format is Steve Wilhite, Well he prounce GIF as ‘ jiff ‘
However, most people still pronounce it “gif” with ( hard G). well, that’s no problem at all.
